New DVD Company: Code Red!

Code Red DVD, a new label specializing in cult films, will unleash a slew of much-requested titles on DVD: the slasher flick DON'T GO IN THE WOODS, remastered from the original negative with many extras including commentary with director James Bryan and CKY's Deron Miller; the first authorized release of the drive-in classic LOVE ME DEADLY, remastered from the original camera negative in its long-unseen X-rated version; the killer cannibal camping flick THE FOREST; the low-budget kung-fu monster classick DEVIL'S EXPRESS; and 1975's FORCED ENTRY in its original director's cut. All discs will feature as many extras as possible, including commentaries and interviews! More information and titles to follow.

FRANKENSTEIN'S BLOODY TERROR Update!

Recently, we spoke to Independent-International Pictures Corp President, Sam Sherman, who gave us some updates on the DVD of FRANKENSTEIN’S BLOODY TERROR (Spanish horror star Paul Naschy’s first appearance as the werewolf, Waldemar Daninsky), coming in October from Media Blasters. The film will be presented widescreen anamorphic, and contain all the footage from the Spanish version, previously missing from the U.S. release, and it will be in English! There will also be a number of extras on the disc including a commentary with Sherman, Paul Naschy video interview, radio spots, TV spots, trailers, and more. Check out the DVD’s cover art (left), and expect it to be released on October 25.

Dark Sky Films Introduces Cult Classics Line of DVDs!

Dark Sky Films, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MPI Home Video, is a new label whose mission is “to deliver the highest quality in classic horror, grindhouse, oddities and 'lost' films to fans of the more eclectic genres of home entertainment.” On August 30, Dark Sky will release the German thriller, THE COLLEGE GIRL MURDERS (1967), based on a story by Edgar Wallace. “The groovalicious swingin' '60s, complete with miniskirts and high-hopped hairdos, sets the stage for a red-robed monk and his killer whip in The College Girl Murders.” Other upcoming releases include such cult favorites as WEREWOLVES ON WHEELS, TERROR BENEATH THE SEA, THE FLESH EATERS (which will no longer be issued by Retromedia), HORROR OF PARTY BEACH, CURSE OF THE LIVING CORPSE, PSYCHOMANIA (aka VIOLENT MIDNIGHT), MAGIC (1978), and others. Universal releases ALL their Hammer Horrors, Lugosi/Karloff set!

Even though Japan's Self-Defense Forces sent Gamera hurtling into space in a giant rocket at the climax of Gamera: The Giant Monster, a stray meteor soon collides with his flying metal prison, freeing the ginormous turtle and allowing him to spin back to Earth. That sounds like it spells doom for Japan, but when another colossal creature named Barugon is awoken from an ancient slumber, all Hell breaks loose. And only Gamera can stop him.

After three greedy Japanese explorers steal a rare opal in New Guinea, not realizing that it is actually a monster egg, and unwittingly subject it to infrared radiation, it hatches and grows to immense size. Barugon is not simply bad because he's big: His elongated tongue, itself a deadly weapon, can emit a freezing spray, while he has the ability to shoot a deadly, laser-like rainbow from his back. And when our favorite fire-spitting Gamera becomes trapped in the creature’s frozen grip, mankind looks like it could be doomed. Gamera Vs. Barugon, the second entry in Daiei Studios’ monster series, was directed by veteran Shigeo Tanaka (The Great Wall) and is more lavish than the original in terms of scale and scope — it was shot in spectacular color! TCM Greatest Classic Films: Hammer Horror!

On September 7, Warner Home Video will be releasing a two-disc DVD set entitled TCM Greatest Classic Films: Hammer Horror. It will feature reissues of HORROR OF DRACULA (1958), THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1957), DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE (1968) and FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED (1970). There is no word yet on whether or not the transfers presented in this collection will differ from those previously released, but we thought you Hammerphiles out there would like to get a glimpse of the cover (above). The set will retail for $27.92.
